Hello, I’m Jae. I write short stories about strange sci-fi and fantasy and stranger protagonists. My preferred themes are around characters outside the norm, from bodyless hackers to religous quadrapedal aliens, and I enjoy exploring a story from the eyes of the Other, whether that is someone on the outside, or something from the other-side.
I began writing when I was very young, and if memory serves, my stories were just as bizarre and spur-of-the-moment as they are today. My inspirations nowadays tend to be from comics, graphic novels and some manga/anime: Battle Angel Alita (the manga!), Blue Gender, and Ghost in the Shell, to James Stokoe and Brandon Graham‘s works, and many, many others. As well, some truly exemplary novels/writers, like Jeffrey Carver‘s The Rapture Effect and From a Changeling Star, and Kameron Hurley‘s series The Bel Dame Apocrypha, to name but a few.
If it’s weird, I want to know why. If it’s alien, I want to know what it’s like. If it’s about humans, I want to know why that should interest me. Stories that are relatable, about some human doing human things in an alien space, are often a dull affair to me; I consume them to explore the wonderfully unrelatable world around the audience stand-in character instead. I live the human life, so I try to write about the other pespectives.
